Lactobacillus strains
The Lactobacillus strains are so named because they produce an enzyme when breaking down foods called lactase. This enzyme helps to break down lactose (milk sugar) - great news for people who avoid dairy products due to lactose intolerance.
L. acidophilus
Can also combat candida overgrowth, so anyone who frequently suffers from yeast infections will want to take this strain as a first course of action. And studies have shown that L. acidophilus enhances immunity, so you may experience fewer colds and flus if you’re taking it.
L. rhamnosus
One of the most intensely studied probiotic strains. It is well documented to help folks recover from diarrhea — and to prevent it from happening in the first place.
L. salivarius
Has the unique ability to eradicate the dreaded Helicobacter pylori bacterium, which is now known to be the major cause of peptic ulcers. This strain secretes a high amount of lactic acid, which completely inhibits the growth of H. pylori.
L. fermentum
A well-characterized probiotic strains with efficacy in the prevention and treatment of urogenital infections in women. It also produces hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and is believed to inhibit the growth of intestinal and urogenital pathogens.
L. plantarum

B. bifidum
Bifidobacteria are prominent probiotic microorganisms in the intestines. They are well-known to alleviate both constipation and diarrhea. Like acidophilus, bifidobacteria also activate the immune system, helping produce antibodies and increase resistance to toxins.

The most common prebiotics are inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Inulin is found in more than 36,000 plants and is their energy reserve. Inulin is present in significant quantities in vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, leeks, onions, garlic, even wheat. It is also present in large amounts in chicory roots from where we extract it. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a natural constituent of Inulin, is fermented by most strains of bifidobacteria. When bifidobacteria grow in environments providing FOS, they do so at the expense of unfriendly, pathogenic bacteria.
Extensive research has shown that ingestion of moderate amounts of inulin, like that found in pHion Balance Probiotic Blend, results in a significant increase (5 to 10 times) of the beneficial bifidobacteria in the intestinal tract. At the same time, the presence of less desirable bacteria is significantly reduced. This proves that each gram of inulin or Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) is of particular benefit to bifidobacteria, stimulating their metabolism and increasing their activity, potentially leading to a healthier colon.
Inulin and oligofructose are soluble dietary fibres. Unlike some synthesized poly and oligosaccharides, our inulin is extracted from chicory roots using hot water. FOS is then obtained through partial enzymatic hydrolysis. When ingested, inulin and oligofructose increase neither the glycemy nor the insulin levels in the blood, making them suitable for diabetics. Studies have also shown that inulin fiber significantly increases the absorption of calcium in the body and even improves bone mineral density. This could have important consequences for prevention of osteoporosis.
